Cooperstown All Star Village Survival Guide: What I Wish I Knew Before Going (From a Sports Mom Who’s Been Twice)
Heading to Cooperstown All Star Village soon? Read this before you pack! After attending Cooperstown twice, I can confidently say there are things no one warns you about, like late-night games, the obsession of pin trading, what kids actually wear all week, and the items you’ll be SO glad you brought. Here’s your real-life Cooperstown survival guide from a sports mom who’s been there (twice).
Introduction:
If your baseball family is heading to Cooperstown All Star Village, first, take a deep breath and get excited.
This is one of those unforgettable baseball experiences your player will remember forever.
But let me be honest…
It can also feel overwhelming trying to figure out what to pack, what your player actually needs, how much money to budget, and what no one tells you before you get there.
After attending Cooperstown TWICE, I’ve learned there are definitely things I wish someone had told us before we arrived.
And trust me, there are things nobody warns you about. Like 2 a.m. baseball games because of rain delays, the surprisingly competitive world of pin trading, wrinkled uniforms that might make moms twitch a little 😂, and why opening day might become one of your favorite memories of the entire trip.
This isn’t your typical Cooperstown packing list.
These are the real-life Cooperstown tips, mistakes to avoid, and little things that make the week smoother for both players and parents.
Whether you’re a first-time Cooperstown parent or heading back for round two, this guide will help you feel prepared, without overpacking your entire house.
And yes… I’m also including my favorite Cooperstown Amazon Essentials List so you can grab everything in one place and save yourself the stress.

Before You Start Packing…
I created a Cooperstown Amazon Essentials List with the exact things we found helpful, from shower shoes and sleeping gear to rain essentials and travel must-haves.
Grab the list here: Cooperstown Must-Have's
Save yourself the late-night Walmart run and the “I wish I packed that” moment.
1. Don’t Overpack (Seriously)
This is probably the biggest mistake parents make.
Take what you packed… and then cut it down.
The boys wear uniforms most of the time, and one of the best surprises is that Cooperstown washes baseball uniforms and gear nightly.
That means your player doesn’t need nearly as many clothes as you think.
Prioritize packing:
✅ Socks
✅ Underwear
✅ Comfortable downtime clothes
✅ Sweatshirt/pullover
✅ Pajamas
✅ Extra towels
Skip packing 17 outfits “just in case.”
To keep things simple (and help my son stay organized), I packed 5 days of clothes in separate packing cubes.
Each cube included:
✅ A shirt
✅ Shorts
✅ Socks
✅ Underwear
This made it SO much easier for him to grab what he needed each day without digging through a messy suitcase or forgetting things.
I also sent him with a small travel laundry hamper, and honestly, it was one of the best things I packed. He could toss dirty clothes in there throughout the week instead of piling them on the floor or mixing clean and dirty clothes together.
Mom tip: Keeping things organized helps the boys be a little more independent, and makes unpacking way less chaotic when they get home.
Trust me.
2. Be Prepared to Spend More Money Than You Think
Let’s just say it…
Cooperstown is not a cheap week.
Even if you budget carefully, there are so many moments where you’ll want to spend money:
Souvenirs
Team gear
Snacks
Ice cream
Extra meals
Trading pins
Photos
Gifts and keepsakes
And honestly?
You probably should leave room for it.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime baseball experience for many families.
My advice: Budget extra spending money ahead of time so you’re not stressed during the week.
3. The Sleeping Situation: What to Actually Bring
Players and coaches stay in bunkhouses, and if your team can…
Have the team rent the bedding package.
It makes life SO much easier.
No hauling bedding.
No forgetting essentials.
No extra stress.
That said, I highly recommend sending an extra throw blanket, because the bedding blanket can feel a little thin.
Also pack:
✅ Pillow
✅ Sleeping bag (if not renting bedding)
✅ 2 towels
✅ Comfortable pajamas/lounge clothes
One thing many parents don’t think about? Window coverings. The past two years, there were no blackout curtains or window coverings provided in the dorms, so getting sleep can be tricky once the sun comes up. I added disposable blackout curtains to my Amazon list, but honestly, black trash bags work just fine too. Either way, I’d consider this a must-pack item.
Keep it simple.
4. Let’s Talk About the Bathhouse Situation
Okay moms…
This is something people don’t always mention.
The bathhouse is shared for players and coaches, and kids typically shower in athletic shorts or swim trunks.
What your player absolutely needs:
✅ Shower shoes/bath shoes
✅ Quick-dry towel
✅ Toiletries in an easy shower caddy
This is not the time for expensive shampoo or complicated routines.
Simple wins.
5. NO Cell Phones = Best Team Bonding Ever
This may be unpopular…
But after seeing it firsthand, I’m a huge believer in this.
One of the best tips we experienced was:
No player cell phones.
And honestly?
It created one of the best bonding experiences I’ve ever seen.
Instead of everyone sitting around scrolling, the boys:
Played games
Talked
Played wiffle ball
Made friends with teams from all over the country
Actually connected
The forced face-to-face interaction made a huge difference.
If your team can make it happen, I highly recommend discussing expectations beforehand.
6. Bring Wiffle Ball Gear
Random?
Yes.
Necessary?
Also yes.
The boys LOVE playing wiffle ball during downtime.
Throw a couple sets in the bag because players end up making friends from teams all over the country and playing pickup games nonstop.
It becomes part of the Cooperstown magic.
7. Baseballs Matter More Than You Think
Have each player bring 2–3 baseballs in their bag.
You’ll be given a bucket, and there are batting cages available, so don’t waste space packing a net.
This seems small, but it’s one of those little tips you’ll be glad someone told you.
8. Opening Day Is AMAZING — GO ALL OUT
I cannot stress this enough:
OPENING DAY IS ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE ENTIRE WEEK.
The energy is unreal.
And the Spirit Challenge? Wild in the best way possible.
This is NOT the time to be shy.
Go all out with:
Matching shirts
Horns
Fat heads
Posters
Team gear
Costumes
Confetti poppers
Crazy team spirit
Does winning matter?
Not really.
But the boys absolutely feed off your energy.
The hype and excitement are unforgettable.
9. Pin Trading Is Basically Its Own Sport
If this is your first Cooperstown experience…
You need to know:
Pin trading is a HUGE deal.
And it starts immediately on opening day.
That first day gives kids some of the best opportunities to trade.
My advice?
Bring MORE pins than you think.
75 pins per kid might not even be enough. (We only took 50 both years and it wasn't enough but that is what our club gave us.)
And here’s the insider tip:
Not all pins are equal.
Some teams create:
Rare pins
Limited editions
Special sets
That becomes part of the fun.
The players seem to learn quickly:
✔ Which pins are rare
✔ Which ones they may want to save
✔ Which are better for trading
And if siblings are coming?
Get sibling pins too.
Trust me, they’ll want in on the action.
Pin trading becomes a game within the game.
10. Where to Stay: Best Lodging Options
After doing Cooperstown, my recommendation is:
Best Options:
✅ Airbnb (be sure to research the area first)
✅ On-site lodging
Being close makes life SO much easier.
Especially because schedules can change quickly.
And trust me…
Weather changes everything.
11. Be Ready for Crazy Game Schedules
This surprises a lot of families.
Weather can completely change the schedule.
Games can happen VERY late.
We’re talking:
Midnight games
1 a.m. starts
Even 2 a.m. baseball
Yes… really.
Rain delays happen often.
Games still get played.
Sometimes they simply move later.
So mentally prepare for:
✔ Flexible schedules
✔ Late nights
✔ Rain games
✔ Last-minute changes
Go in expecting flexibility and you’ll be much less stressed.
12. Rain Gear Is NOT Optional
Even if the forecast looks perfect…
Pack for rain.
Because baseball still happens.
Bring:
✅ Poncho
✅ Umbrella
✅ Waterproof rain jacket
✅ Waterproof shoes if possible
✅ Extra change of clothes
Coaches especially:
Bring actual waterproof gear because the pullover isn’t fully waterproof.
You’ll thank yourself later.
13. Bring a Backpack Cooler (Seriously)
This might be one of the smartest Cooperstown hacks.
A backpack cooler makes life SO much easier.
Pack:
Drinks
Snacks
Sandwiches
Protein bars
Fruit
Ice packs
It saves money and helps avoid constantly buying expensive snacks onsite.
Especially if you’re traveling with small children/siblings.
14. Sharpies = Survival Tool
This sounds silly…
Until your kid loses half their stuff.
Bring a Sharpie and label EVERYTHING.
Seriously.
Label:
Water bottles
Hoodies
Towels
Gloves
Equipment
Toiletries
Clothing
Things get mixed up FAST.
I also highly recommend making a packing checklist of everything your player brought. (I just put everything in the Notes section of my phone).
Because somehow things disappear into the Cooperstown universe 😂
15. Let’s Talk About Laundry (Moms, Prepare Yourself 😂)
One of the best conveniences?
Cooperstown washes baseball uniforms and gear nightly.
Amazing, right?
Yes…
BUT.
Mom warning:
They wash everything together in mesh bags and it sits overnight.
So your perfectly crisp baseball-mom standards?
Might need to relax a little.
The uniforms aren’t terrible…
Just wrinkled enough to make moms internally twitch 😂
Totally worth not doing laundry yourself though.
16. Bunkhouse Sanity Tips
A few things that helped keep the chaos under control:
Daily Clean-Up Rotation
Assign 2 players each day to sweep.
Nightly Tidying
Have everyone clean their bunk area before bed.
Bathroom Routine
Before lights out:
✔ Bathroom trip
✔ Teeth brushed
✔ Water bottle filled
The first night is usually the hardest because excitement + homesickness + little sleep = chaos.
After that?
Most kids settle in quickly.
17. Water, Water, Water
Hydration is a BIG deal.
Our team went through two cases of bottled water per day in the bunkhouse. One thing that really helped last year was that Cooperstown added refillable water stations, and players were given a Gatorade water bottle, which made hydration much easier during those long, hot baseball days.
A smart idea:
Assign parents to rotate bringing Gatorade/water so one family isn’t stuck handling everything.
18. Get the Photo Package (You Won’t Regret It)
If your team decides to do the team photo package, it’s usually the best deal.
But if they don’t?
Get the individual package.
Yes, you’ll take tons of photos yourself.
But these photos become keepsakes from a once-in-a-lifetime baseball experience.
The week flies by faster than you think.
You won’t regret having them.
After going to Cooperstown twice, here’s my biggest advice:
Don’t obsess over perfection.
You’re going to forget something.
Schedules will change.
The weather will be unpredictable.
Your player might wear wrinkled baseball pants.
And none of that will matter.
Because what they’ll remember is:
The friendships.
The baseball.
The pin trading.
The opening day energy.
The laughs in the dorms.
The late nights.
The memories.
Cooperstown is exhausting, emotional, chaotic, expensive…
And somehow completely worth every second.
Take the pictures.
Buy the souvenir.
Cheer embarrassingly loud.
Soak it all in.
Because somehow the week flies by faster than you ever expect.
Good luck, baseball mama.
You’re about to make memories your family will never forget.
